Are You Tired Of Feeling Misunderstood Or Othered?

  • Is living as an LGBTQIA+-identifying person in today’s world causing undue stress, anxiety, or depression?

  • Have previous experiences in LGBTQIA+ therapy failed to meet your needs?

  • Would you welcome an accepting environment to feel seen, understood, and celebrated?

  1. No matter who you are or how you identify, you may be struggling to cope with the additional pressures you face. Perhaps you experience microaggressions from family members or coworkers that serve as a constant reminder that you’re never fully accepted for who you are.

Or maybe you are exploring your identity or sexuality and wondering how to navigate the uncertainty ahead of you. In the face of internal confusion and external disapproval, you may feel alone and in need of a safe sounding board.

    Your Family May Be Unsupportive

If a lack of acceptance or understanding has impacted relationships with family members, you may feel alienated and isolated. As much as you may want to strengthen your connection and be more open with them, you may be unsure of what steps to take. Without a support system in place, you may experience moments when anxiety and depression keep you stuck, and you seek out unhealthy ways of coping, like substances.

The good news is that LGBTQIA+ therapy offers a safe and supportive environment to work through the challenges you’re coming up against. Our holistic approach to mental health helps individuals, families, and couples identify effective coping tools that integrate body and mind.

The LGBTQIA+ Community Still Struggles To Gain Acceptance

Although our society has made progress in being more accepting of the LGBTQIA+ community compared to previous decades, we still have a long way to go. Unfortunately, intolerance and discrimination persist, especially in some areas of the country. More recently, we’ve witnessed a hostile political climate that won’t acknowledge that certain members of the LGBTQIA+ community exist, effectively trying to silence us.

For anyone who identifies as LGBTQIA+, these circumstances often take an emotional and psychological toll. Not only are we made to feel like we’re not accepted for being our true selves, but at times, we may fear for our safety. Even when we’ve achieved a measure of self-acceptance, it’s hard to sustain it when it’s at odds with larger power structures and local systems that remain unfriendly to the LGBTQIA+ community and deny our truth.

Living In A Rural Community Often Limits Options For Quality Support

Our feelings of isolation can be further exacerbated when, due to geography, we lack convenient access to therapists trained to support the LGBTQIA+ community. Many of us have had bad experiences in therapy when we realized our counselor had no awareness of their implicit biases or lacked curiosity and insight about the LGBTQIA+ experience.

Within the broader context of being a mental health resource within a small community, Scottsville Counseling honors each member's story as unique and worthy of being heard and cherished. By offering LGBTQIA+-affirming therapy, we hope to provide the support and care you need to thrive.

LGBTQIA+-Affirming Therapy Provides A Safe Place To Be Seen, Heard, And Validated

Although I recognize the LGBTQIA+ community is in no way a monolith, many of its members have experienced discrimination, judgment, and ongoing microaggressions that lead to low self-esteem and mental health concerns. Because these additional stressors can make day-to-day life more challenging to navigate, finding compassionate professional support is often a crucial component to ensure long-term health and wellness.

Your LGBTQIA+-affirming therapist will be a confidante, cheerleader, and colleague who you can trust will always have your back. By offering emotional support, providing information about local resources, and teaching effective coping strategies, your therapist will help you build resilience and navigate the complexities of everyday life.

In addition to providing individual therapy to address anxiety, depression, and trauma, we offer same sex marriage counseling to help couples strengthen their relationship. I also have experience working with parents and their teens who may have already come out as trans or are currently exploring their gender and/or sexuality. Regardless of what brings you to therapy, finding holistic solutions to restore well-being will be key.

What To Expect In LGBTQIA+ Therapy

First and foremost, your therapist aims to build trust and connection with you by offering a safe, non-judgmental space where no subject is off-limits. Our collaborative approach values your expertise, wisdom, and ongoing feedback to ensure we’re utilizing the best tools to foster the most growth, healing, and transformation.

Because I want to ensure LGBTQIA+ therapy is tailored to suit your needs, it may take a few sessions to identify goals that resonate with you and address broader concerns. For example, I may initially target your most challenging symptoms, such as high anxiety or depression resulting from microaggressions or disconnection with family. Once you’ve learned more effective ways to cope with ongoing stressors, we can then move on to the deeper work related to sexuality and gender identity.

The Modalities We Draw From In LGBTQIA+ Counseling

As an integrative mental health group, I value the diverse array of skillsets our therapists bring to our practice, including evidence-based and newly emerging modalities. Depending on your needs and preferences, your therapist may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), narrative, and solution-focused therapy to support you. In addition to incorporating more traditional forms of talk therapy, I also offer somatic-based practices—such as meditation, massage, yoga, Reiki, and breathwork—to help you soothe both body, mind, and spirit.

For example, DBT-based mindfulness can help ease self-judgment, offering ways to practice compassionate curiosity when confronting harder emotional moments. Narrative therapy can be particularly effective for gaining objectivity about the external influences that inform self-perception, namely, largely held societal beliefs and norms. Letting go of faulty core beliefs allows you to re-author a new story based on acceptance and empowerment.

I hope that by providing you with new skills, perspective, and resources, you will come to recognize the amazing person you are. It may feel scary taking the first steps forward, but you won't have to do it alone. I’ll be by your side, supporting you along the way.

But Maybe You’re Not Sure If LGBTQIA+ Therapy Is Right For You…

I’m not sure how much I want to share with a therapist in counseling about LGBTQIA+-related issues.

As someone who identifies as LGBTQIA+, I recognize that you may be afraid to trust your counselor enough to open up about your journey in therapy. That’s understandable.

I will ensure I follow your pace, allowing you to share only as much as you feel comfortable with. I aim to hold space in a safe, supportive environment while also honoring your feedback and expertise as we build a collaborative plan.

What if I've had a bad experience in LGBTQIA+ counseling?

Unfortunately, some therapists haven’t identified their own biases or may not have received the necessary training to support the LGBTQIA+ community’s unique issues, such as gender identity, transgender, or same sex couples therapy. The LGBTQIA+-affirmative therapy I provide endeavors to be open, curious, inclusive, and to embrace diversity. I understand that it’s not up to our clients to teach us—it’s up to us to ensure we have the skillset to support you.

Will LGBTQIA+ therapy remain confidential?

Maintaining confidentiality is not only required by law, but also sacred to me. Therapy doesn’t work unless you know that what you share is confidential. When I work with couples and families, I value sharing only the most critical information to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being while also making progress.
